Guidance for Prospective Students 

Welcome to New Opportunities and thank you for choosing UHI Perth. 

We want to make your interview as stress-free as possible and this quick guide is designed to help you make the most of your interview experience. 

The following is a guide for Gateway 2 Creative Industries NQ 

Here is the timetable for your Interview 

  • NQ Gateway 2 Creative Industries a 15–20-minute individual interview
  • Listening to a short presentation about the courses (5 minutes) then answer a set of questions about your creative knowledge.

Please make sure you complete the course diagnostics forms sent to you by admissions as part of the interview process. Failure to provide this will result in the interview being postponed for another date. 

It’s is not essential for the Interview but if you have any Artwork you wish to show you will have an opportunity to do this during your individual interview.

Thank you for your application to the, NQ Art and Design course at UHI Perth. We would like to offer our support in making the interview process a positive experience for you. 

The interview process will take place on campus. 

The structure for the day will be as follows,

  • Welcome presentation (10 min)
  • Practical group activity & individual interviews (80 min) 

Individual interviews 

Individual interviews will take place while other applicants are engaged in the group activity. During this we will review your portfolio and ask you some questions. You will also have the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have. 

In preparation for your interview please consider the following questions, 

  • Why you are interested in applying to the NQ Art & Design course?
  • What motivates your creative practice?
  • Where do you get creative inspiration from?
  • What specific creative skills and interests do you have? 

Portfolio Submission Requirements 

Please submit a digital portfolio to: cci.perth@uhi.ac.uk a minimum of one week in advance of your scheduled interview date. Please do not send your portfolio from an iCloud account. While not essential, please feel free to also bring a physical portfolio of work on the day.

The portfolio should contain between 8 and 10 good quality images of creative work. This can include but is not restricted to, 

  • A wide range of mediums and materials; illustration, mixed-media, painting, photography, digital work, video, animation, 2D and 2D pieces. 
  • Images of experimentation, development and final pieces.
  • Self-directed projects as well as formal work produced under guidance. 

The portfolio should, 

  • Be submitted as one complete PDF file.
  • Include one good quality image per page. 
  • Include any relevant information under the image i.e. the background of the work, the title, the materials used, scale etc. 

It is essential that you have a portfolio for interview regardless of the level that you are applying for so that the interviewing panel is able to make an appropriate decision regarding your suitability for the course. Failure to provide this will result in the interview being postponed for another date. 

Portfolio Preparation 

When preparing images for inclusion in your portfolio please ensure that the images are of a suitable resolution. 

Adobe Scan is an app which is free to download to your phone. It is an excellent and easy way to photograph your work. It will sharpen images and compile then into a complete PDF for you.
