Perth III: Mountains of Our Future Earth is the third international mountains conference to take place in Perth, Scotland.

PERTH I - 2005

In October 2005, many issues relevant to mountain areas were addressed in the Open Science Conference of the GLOCHAMORE (Global Change and Mountain Regions) project, funded principally by the EU 6th Framework Programme, with further support from UNESCO.

The event was organised by the Centre for Mountain Studies in collaboration with the other GLOCHAMORE project partners, and was attended by 210 people from 41 countries.

Published outcomes included the GLOCHAMORE Research Strategy, the proceedings, and a number of special issues of peer-reviewed journals.

PERTH II - 2010

Global Change and the World's Mountains

Five years later, the CMS, in collaboration with the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), organised a second conference on global change and the world’s mountains. It was attended by 450 people from 60 countries.

It provided an unparalleled opportunity for mountain scientists from a very wide of natural and social science disciplines to meet and to present and discuss their research.

The key published outcome was a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal ‘Mountain Research and Development’, including plenary papers, a synthesis of all papers presented, and two prospective policy papers.

The conference also provided opportunities for presentation and further development of activities within various global and regional programmes/initiatives either focussing specifically on mountain themes or with a mountain component: a three-day pre-meeting brought together 80 scientists from five continents for a meeting of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA); other initiatives (e.g., the South Eastern European Mountain Research Network, SEEMORE; the Mountain Invasive Research Network, MIREN) organized lunchtime sessions; and the conference was followed by a one-day strategy session organized by the MRI, which focused on future research activities and means to ensure a high profile for mountain issues in the Rio+20 process and other global assessment and policy processes.
