Generations of UHI Perth Community
Graduation 2025
UHI Perth celebrated a remarkable legacy of learning and service at the Graduation ceremony on Thursday 2 October as Kayleigh Sailor graduated with a BA (Hons) in Child and Youth Studies - marking three generations of one family deeply connected to the college.
Kayleigh follows in the footsteps of her mother, Donna Willans, who graduated with an HND in Mechanical Engineering in 1999, as part of one of the final cohorts of the 20th century. Her grandmother, Elaine Fairlie, is a beloved former staff member who dedicated over 30 years to supporting students and colleagues at UHI Perth. Elaine’s own journey began in the 1990s, when she studied alongside fellow staff member Isobel Syme. Elaine said:
“This year’s celebration was especially meaningful for our family. Three generations of women have been part of the UHI Perth community - as students, staff, and graduates. Despite only having had three hours sleep on returning from holiday – I wouldn’t have missed Kayleigh graduating for the world!”
Kayleigh said:
“Graduating from UHI Perth feels incredibly special, not just for me, but for my whole family - knowing that my mum studied here and my gran dedicated so much of her life to supporting students makes this moment feel like I’m continuing a legacy. I’m proud to be part of a place that’s shaped so many lives, including ours.”
Donna said:
“I’m such a proud mum watching my firstborn graduate with honours and begin to make her mark on the world. It’s brought back so many memories of my own time at UHI Perth- from the friendships and lectures to all the laughter along the way! Being part of the final graduating class of 1999 made it feel even more special.”
Catherine Etri, Interim Principal and Chief Executive, added:
“From engineering to education, this family’s story reflects the diversity of opportunity and the enduring legacy of UHI Perth as a place where futures are shaped across generations.”
Isobel Syme, PA to the Senior Leadership Team explained:
“This feels like a full-circle moment. Elaine and I began our learning journeys here decades ago, and now we’re celebrating her granddaughter’s success. It’s a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact education can have.”
