From Student to Staff: John Dare Shares Inspirational Journey at UHI Perth Open Day

It's never too late to rewrite your future

As part of its upcoming Open Day, UHI is hosting an inspiring presentation led by former student and current staff member John Dare, whose remarkable personal and professional journey reflects the life‑changing impact of returning to education as an adult.

At 48 years old, John made the bold decision to go back to education after many years in the workforce. Having spent his earlier career in a variety of roles that provided experience but limited long‑term fulfilment, he realised that the ambitions he once set aside were still waiting for him. Motivated by a desire to grow, to challenge himself, and to reset the direction of his life, John enrolled at UHI Perth -an environment he would later describe as one of the most supportive and transformative spaces he’d ever encountered.

During his studies, John embraced opportunities to learn new digital and professional skills, build confidence, and reconnect with the joy of learning. His dedication, combined with the guidance of lecturers and the encouragement of a diverse student community, sparked a shift that opened doors he had never expected, including a job at the very institution where he once studied.

Now a valued staff member at UHI Perth, John plays an important role in helping others begin their own learning journeys. His lived experience gives him a powerful perspective: he understands the anxieties, challenges, and hopes of adults returning to education because he has lived them.

At the Open Day, John will deliver a talk titled "My Journey Back to Education: Starting Again at 48”, sharing:

  • Why he chose to return to education later in life
  • His working life before joining UHI Perth as a student
  • The challenges and breakthroughs he experienced during his studies
  • How studying at UHI Perth reshaped his personal and professional future
  • His transition from student to staff member, and what motivates his work today

John says:

“Returning to education at 48 was one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made. UHI Perth didn’t just give me new skills—it gave me a new direction and a new sense of purpose.”

John’s story aims to inspire adults and younger learners alike, demonstrating that it is never too late to rewrite your future.
