Apprenticeship Success Highlighted During MSP Visit

UHI Perth was pleased to support the Scottish Apprenticeship Week visit from Murdo Fraser MSP

Hosted at the WM McGarrie & Son premises at Lower Harbour in Perth, the visit—coordinated by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the strong and long‑standing partnership between UHI Perth and the metal fabrication specialist.

Sarah-Jane Urquhart, National Training Programmes and Employability Manager explained: "The visit highlighted the powerful impact of employer–education partnerships in supporting individuals through work‑based learning. As a Training Provider, UHI Perth works closely with a wide range of organisations through our apprenticeship pathways, helping to develop skilled staff and strengthen the regional economy."

Shaun Gray, a former Modern Apprentice who is now a foreman with the company, said: “The Modern Apprenticeship I completed seven years ago was a fantastic opportunity. It allowed me to learn while I earned, work hard, and be rewarded for that effort. The hands‑on, practical training has been invaluable, alongside the college course that helped me gain the qualifications I needed.

“I hope my journey encourages younger people starting out in their apprenticeships. I really enjoy working with the younger lads, meeting them at their level, earning their respect, and seeing how much they learn from the experienced team around them. The older workers pass on their skills, and that makes us all stronger. I particularly enjoyed the welding work I did while at college — it set me up for where I am today.”

Skills Development Scotland Chair, Frank Mitchell added: “Scottish Apprenticeships provide real returns for employers, individuals and the economy.

“People from all backgrounds are gaining meaningful career opportunities through apprenticeships, creating diverse workforces that benefits business and our society. At a time when employers are seeing skill shortages all over the country, apprenticeships have never been so important than they are now.”
