UHI ranked second in Scotland for music in Guardian University Guide 2027
UHI Perth's music programmes have been recognised among the top in the UK
After achieving impressive results in the latest Guardian University Guide 2027 rankings, the University of the Highlands and Islands has been ranked second in Scotland for music and 25th out of 83 institutions across the UK.
UHI Perth contributes to the university’s music provision through programmes including BA (Hons) Popular Music, helping students develop performance, songwriting, production and industry skills within a supportive and creative learning environment.
The rankings place UHI Perth alongside some of the country's leading music institutions and reinforce its reputation for delivering high-quality music education in a supportive and creative learning environment.
Dr Seán McLaughlin, Subject Leader for Music and Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Popular Music at UHI Perth, said:
“We're delighted to see music at UHI recognised so highly in the Guardian rankings. Achieving second place in Scotland and ranking among the UK's leading music subject areas is a fantastic achievement and reflects the talent, dedication and creativity of our students, graduates and staff.
“These results demonstrate that students can access an outstanding music education here in Perth while benefiting from small class sizes, a strong focus on transferrable, future-proof creative skills in music, and making use of our excellent recording and rehearsal facilities."
UHI Perth's music department offers students opportunities to develop their performance, songwriting, production and industry skills while working closely with experienced academics and practising musicians.

The success comes as UHI Perth prepares to welcome prospective students to its upcoming Open Day on Saturday 3 October 2026, 10am to 2pm, where visitors will have the opportunity to tour the campus, meet lecturers and current students, and find out more about the music and popular music degree programmes.
