Teacher shortage ‘crisis’ highlights growing demand for Technological Education graduates
UHI Perth degree prepares the next generation of teachers to tackle STEM skills gap
A recent BBC News report has highlighted growing concerns across Scotland’s secondary schools, with some forced to reduce timetables and cut subjects due to a shortage of specialist teachers.
Education leaders have described the situation as a “crisis”, particularly in key areas such as design technology, computing, maths and science, meaning pupils are not always able to access the full range of subjects.
In response to this growing challenge, UHI Perth is preparing the next generation of teachers through its BSc (Hons) Technological Education degree.
The course is designed for students passionate about STEM and provides the skills and experience needed to become a Technological Education teacher in secondary schools, combining engineering, construction, design and digital technologies with modern teaching practice.
Students develop expertise in specialist areas such as practical engineering, construction skills and computer-aided design, alongside gaining real classroom experience.
Graduates are well placed to progress into Scotland’s teaching workforce via the national induction scheme, entering a profession where demand for qualified teachers continues to grow.
The need for design and technology teachers is part of a wider national picture. Across the UK, skills shortages in science and technology are a major concern, with employers and educators calling for more people to enter STEM-related careers.
At the same time, shortages of specialist teachers mean some schools are relying on non-specialists or reducing subject choice, highlighting the importance of training new teachers with the right expertise.
Heidi Hope, Sector Manger - Science, Engineering and Aviation, said:
“There has never been a more important time to train as a Technological Education teacher. This course equips students with both subject expertise and teaching skills, enabling them to make a real difference in classrooms across Scotland.”
UHI Perth is encouraging prospective students interested in STEM, engineering or teaching to consider a career in Technological Education and play a role in shaping the future workforce.
