Shortlisted for Two CDN College Awards 2025
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony later this year.
UHI Perth has been shortlisted for two prestigious accolades at the upcoming CDN College Awards 2025, recognising both individual excellence and institutional innovation in further education across Scotland.
The college is a finalist in the categories of Student of the Year and Inclusive College Award, showcasing its commitment to empowering students and fostering inclusive learning environments.
Christopher Kaan Caudwell, a computing student at UHI Perth, has been nominated for Student of the Year in recognition of his remarkable academic and personal journey. Originally from Turkey, Christopher moved to Scotland alone to pursue his passion for inclusive technology. He demonstrated extraordinary resilience - continuing his studies remotely during a mental health crisis and returning stronger than ever.
Christopher is a class representative, President of the Computing Club, and a leading voice in the college’s neurodiverse group. His AI-powered app, Gestura, which translates British Sign Language into speech, has won multiple business competitions and earned him recognition from industry leaders and government officials.
“Christopher exemplifies the transformative power of education,” said Gerald McLaughlin, Student Experience Manager. “His innovation, empathy, and leadership have made a lasting impact on our college community.”
In addition, UHI Perth’s International Integration Initiative (3i) has been shortlisted for the Inclusive College Award, celebrating its pioneering work in supporting ESOL students - many of whom are refugees and asylum seekers.
The initiative reimagines language education by integrating cultural experiences and cross-departmental collaboration. Students have participated in activities ranging from cooking traditional Scottish dishes and ceilidh dancing to cricket training and historical excursions. These experiences have helped students feel part of the wider college community and better understand Scottish society.
The programme has also led to increased student engagement, with ESOL learners winning awards and progressing into mainstream courses. Partnerships with organisations such as Police Scotland, The Bike Station, and the Highlands and Islands Student Association have further enhanced the initiative’s reach and impact.
“This nomination reflects our belief that education should be inclusive, empowering, and transformative,” said John Small, ESOL Sector Manager. “We’re proud to support students who are building new lives in Scotland.”
The CDN College Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of colleges, staff, and students across Scotland. UHI Perth’s dual nomination highlights its dedication to nurturing talent and creating opportunities for all.
