PKAVS Partner to Support Student Wellbeing
UHI Perth and PKAVS Partner to Support Student Wellbeing Through ‘The Big Project’

A collaboration between UHI Perth and local charity PKAVS is continuing to make a real difference in the lives of students, helping to ease the pressures of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
This year, UHI Perth’s staff-led initiative, The Big Project, took a significant step forward by joining forces with PKAVS’ Big Hoose Project—a community donation scheme supporting individuals and families across Perth and Kinross.
Led by Student Engagement Coordinator Sam Monie, The Big Project provides essential food and household items to students facing financial hardship. A fun ‘vehicle themed’ pick-up point on-campus offer a discreet and dignified way for students to access support when they need it most.
“By working together, we’ve been able to connect students with vital resources—everything from food and toiletries to warm clothing,” said Sam. “But more than that, we’re showing students that they matter. This is about building a community where they feel safe, respected, and supported.”
The initiative has already supported hundreds of students, addressing not only financial challenges but also contributing to improved mental wellbeing. Its impact has been recognised nationally, with a nomination for the Supporting Student Wellbeing Award at the Herald Higher Education Awards 2025.
Paul Paterson, Project Lead at PKAVS, added: “This partnership has helped remove barriers and ensure support reaches those who need it most, when they need it. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
Looking ahead, The Big Project will return in the next academic year with renewed energy, new ideas, and the same commitment to putting student wellbeing at the heart of campus life.
