What is special about this course?

Introduction to Horticulture gives the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of practical skills in gardening and hard landscaping in a real setting. Perth and Kinross has a large number of gardens and estates that can provide work for those interested in a career in this area.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, study up to SCQF Level 3 is desirable and you should be able to demonstrate a clear interest in pursuing a career in this field.

The selection process will include a discussion of your application at interview.

You will carry out a wide range of hard landscaping and gardening tasks such as:

  • Laying slabs
  • Fence construction
  • Walling
  • Preparing ground for planting
  • Pruning
  • Fruit and vegetable production
  • Border maintenance 

You will also learn about lawn care, plant health and gain knowledge in the identification of plants.

You will also improve your numeracy, communication and IT skills.  Work experience with a horticultural company or enterprise is also part of the course.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

You could progress to the NQ Horticulture SCQF Level 5.

The Introduction to Horticulture can prepare you for employment in the field of landscaping and gardening with a landscape or horticultural company in areas such as environmental services, ground maintenance or domestic and contract gardening.
