Study an HNC or HND with UHI Perth
Achieving a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) is a great way to stand out in a competitive job market and prepare for a successful career. Our qualifications give you more than just a certificate - they give you skills and experience that employers are hungry for giving you more confidence, more opportunities, and more pathways to success.
Here's why these flexible qualifications might be right for you
Higher National qualifications (HNs) are widely recognised by employers, colleges and universities. Think of them as the foundations to a degree – you can get a valuable, buildable qualification, without committing to a subject with four years of study all at once.
What makes an HNC/HND special?
You can take the first step into higher education while keeping your options open, here’s how:
- You’ll get a feel for a subject and where it can take you, before signing up to a full degree
- With an HN under your belt, you can take a gap year or a break and come back again to continue your studies when it suits you
- You can top up your HN to a degree, or fast-track into year two or three of a relevant degree
- You still have the choice to move away later for further study without delaying your learning
- They're specifically designed to lead to careers, giving you the knowledge and the practical skills that employers are looking for
Learn locally in your community, choosing from a range of subjects.

"I started at UHI Perth when I was still in school, in fifth year, on an online course for Charted Management. After I left school, at the end of fifth year, I applied and started on the HNC Hospitality Operations course.
"UHI Perth is a great place for anyone who is maybe not in a position yet to go to university but also maybe not ready to be in no education at all. With the range of courses, it’s a great place to get qualifications straight after school. The support and effort lecturers provide in both delivery and out with is incredible. I was not overly academic at school; however, your lecturers are able to help with any questions on how to write academic pieces, or just general questions about anything to do with the course.
"I am now going on to study with Edinburgh Napier University for BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management."
