One of our nursery children, Sonny, loved to drum and talked about his love of drumming most days.

Inspired by this, his keyworker helped write a letter to the College’s music department to see if they could help develop his passion.

Sonny started individual drumming lessons to start with, and we opened this up to all children in the 3-5 room, inspiring a new musical journey. Music students began to visit us in the nursery where they introduced the children to different musical instruments, simple songs, and rhyme to encourage new musical skills. Further lessons with lecturer Mark introduced songs and rhyme - and the idea of putting on a ‘Rockfest’ grew from there.

Lianne Schemper, Nursery Manager explained: "Music is a wonderful mode of self-expression, and the children loved learning new songs and musical skills. We have a lot of children who have English as an additional language, and music allows them to become familiar with language patterns and how words are placed together.

"I am sure some of parents can still hear them singing ‘Tingalayo’ enthusiastically! We are looking forward to our next journey and seeing where it takes us this year."
