What is special about this course?

The Professional Chef Award is a unique culinary arts experience that attracts many types of people who want to pursue a career within one of the fastest growing industries in the country.  You will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for a busy kitchen environment through a mix of college study, including skills training enhanced with an integral in-house work placement within the Food Court, visits to food suppliers, producers and the finest kitchens in the area.  This course qualifies for the Student Scholarship programme

Entry requirements

It would be helpful to have an SVQ 1 but not essential.

Applicants should have core skills at Int 1/National 4 in Communications, Numeracy and IT.  You will also be invited to attend an interview and practical skills test.

This year long programme is delivered over three days per week and includes a range of interesting and relevant subjects:

  • SVQ 2 Professional Cookery;
  • Gleneagles Professional Patisserie Certificate;
  • REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) Elementary Food Hygiene;
  • College Health and Safety certificate;

Professional practice is an integral part of the course which is carried out in the Food Court.  You will also study five Core Skills, including communication, ICT and numeracy, which can help you to gain the essential skills required for life, learning and employment.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

You may apply to progress to SVQ 3 Professional Chef Gold, HNC Hospitality or HNC Professional Cookery or a modern apprentice work-based programme of study.  Higher Food Hygiene, Communcations and IT is required to progress to HNC.

Posts at trainee or assistant chef level.
