What is special about this course?
SVQ Hairdressing (SCQF Level 5) is a course which will allow you to gain and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of the industry sector and related industries. The SVQ is a qualification that should be recognised by any potential employer as a measure of your abilities and should allow for employment in a junior role within the hairdressing industry. The course is delivered on a full-time basis and will provide you with a qualification and a defined skill set which reflects the skills essential for a successful career in this sector of employment. The main aim of the award is to introduce you to the professional principles and practices of Hairdressing which will help you to make informed future career choices and enhance your employability skills.
Entry requirements
- Two qualifications at SQA National 3/4 or other relevant qualification or experience.
- Alternatively, hairdressing at SCQF level 4 or S/NVQ 1 or equivalent. Applicants with relevant work experience will also be considered on an individual basis.
- For non-English speaking student’s literacy Level 2 is a requirement.
- Applicants who do not hold a relevant qualification may still apply.
All applicants selected for interview will be required to undertake a diagnostic test which includes a written statement and a practical activity. The selection process will include a discussion of your application at interview and you should be able to demonstrate a clear interest in pursuing a career in this field.

- Selling Skills
- Shampooing
- Conditioning and Scalp Massage
- Blow Drying Techniques
- Ladies Hairdressing: Basic Cutting Categories, Mix, Apply and Remove Colour, Setting and Winding Techniques for Hair
- Essential Core skills (Numeracy, Communication, and ICT).

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.
Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
What can I do on completion of my course?
This course can provide progression to SVQ Hairdressing SCQF Level 6 and/or employment in a salon as a Junior Stylist.
