The motor repair and maintenance industry is a thriving career area, where undertaking this pre-apprenticeship programme you will have the opportunity, to gain a variety of knowledge and skills ready to apply for an apprenticeship and or further study on to our L5 IMI Institute of the Motor Industry qualification. 

This practical car mechanics course is designed to engage with candidates who are interested in learning, the introductory skills and knowledge, required to start a career in the automotive repair and maintenance industry. It's aimed at learners who prefer 'hands-on' learning, thus it has a practical approach to both delivery and assessment. We also provide access to bespoke online learning material, to stimulate further interest for those looking at course progression opportunities, for the following academic year.

Entry requirements

Ideally National 4 Grade in Maths, English and a Science or technical or skills based subject, this may be waived dependant on candidate experience, maturity and interest in working in the retail automotive industry at the discretion of the department.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

After completion of the course, you may be able to progress to the L5 IMI Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course. This qualification may allow candidates to progress into Employment, a Modern Apprenticeship (College Day Release) or to the following IMI Qualifications: Full time: IMI Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles at SCQF Level 5.
