Sports Studies NQ Level 5

What is special about this course?

The NQ Sport Studies is a practical-based sports course which offers hands-on learning within the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing (ASW). You will take part in active learning through leadership, scholarship, teamwork, and fitness. This approach will give students a practical understanding and prepare them for careers in coaching, fitness and act as a stepping stone to progress onto further sports courses.

This is a Category 1 PVG course. During the course you will have contact with vulnerable groups of people, therefore to successfully complete the course, you are required to be a member of the PVG Scheme. Entry requirements

You should demonstrate active involvement in sport or fitness (for example; participation in playing/coaching/officiating with a sport based club and/or fitness, participating/instructing within an exercise/fitness based group) by providing a written reference that supports your application from a relevant individual or organisation such as a PE teacher, club coach or fitness club.

Applicants should have a core skills profile in the following three competencies at a minimum of SCQF Level 4 (Communication, ICT and Numeracy) and attend an interview.  Students must also be accepted as a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme member through the college system.  Placements cannot be started without this.

Applicants must also have four SCQF Level 4 passes or equivalent in relevant subject areas (such as Physical Education, Biology/Human Anatomy).

Those who are returning  to learning and who bring relevant life experience will also be considered.  They will be required to write a brief written assignment prior to being offered a place on the course.

Your practical study may include officiating and organising sports such as football, basketball and volleyball as well as participating in these sports.

This course offers a well-balanced combination of practical activity alongside the academic study of sport and fitness and core skills development.
