Access to Nursing (SWAP) NQ

What is special about this course?

This course is for adults who have been out of full-time education for at least three years and who want to enter a degree programme in nursing or progress into health and social care.

This course is a SWAP (Scottish Wider Access Programme) where it will help you to develop the skills you need to progress into Higher Education.

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at people who have been out of full-time education for at least three years and have achieved qualifications.  Biology at Credit level (Standard Grade) or National 5 is desirable. 

All applicants will be required to successfully pass a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check.

A professional reference and written piece is required before interview.

Units studied include:

  • Core skills (communication, ICT, numeracy)
  • Values and principles in care;
  • First Aid
  • Human Biology

A community involvement placement will help you develop organisational, planning and problem solving skills as well as the interpersonal skills that are vital to members of the caring professions.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

You can apply for our HNC Social Care, HNC Care and Administrative Practice or HNC/BA Social Sciences courses.

You may be able to join the degree course in Nursing at the University of Dundee or Stirling.  Similar programmes at other Scottish universities may also be open to you.
