Mathematics - Evening National 5

What is special about this course?

This is a popular and demanding one-year course. Classes begin in early September and it is important to join the class as soon as possible.

In addition to weekly classes, you must be able commit to regular revision and homework as well as well as having excellent class attendance.  As a guide, we recommend learners undertake half an hour of self-study each day out with class time.

Entry requirements

To do well in this course, students should be comfortable with algebra shorthands, simple equations, negative numbers, coordinates, fractions and percentages. They should have experience with , Pythagoras, and sin, cos & tan.

Therefore, to be considered for this course you need a pass at National 4 maths (SCQF level 4) or equivalent (such as Standard Grade 3 or 4, Intermediate 1 or O-grade).

Please note the Applications and Lifeskills versions of National 4 are not suitable entry qualifications.

Depending on your previous experience, you may be asked to complete a workbook of background questions to assess your suitability and refresh your prior knowledge ahead of the course starting.

You will need a scientific calculator for this course. Recommended models are the Casio fx-83 or 85 GTX or GT Plus.

The course consists of three units. Topics studied include rearranging formulas, factorising quadratics, the equation of a line, statistics, triangle trigonometry, surds, vectors, similarity, simultaneous equations and trig graphs.

Your final grade is determined by the external exam in May alone. Along the way, there will be regular weekly homework which you are expected to hand in, and you may also be asked to complete unit assessments as a progress check.
