Higher English is a SQA accredited course with a value of three credits. You will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to understand and appreciate the techniques writers use to create meaning and impact in their writing.
We offer a range of day and evening classes in Higher English and via Distance Learning for those who are unable to attend taught classes.
An initial activity must be completed by the applicant in order to assess suitability for the level.
Studied texts may include prose, poetry, drama and journalism. You will also learn how to write effective fiction and non-fiction, producing two pieces or writing for external assessment.
Higher English students are assessed through a series of internal and external assessments. The internal assessments take the form of units marked by your lecturer. The external assessment involves the submission of a folio of writing and a final exam which consists of two papers. The folio and final exam papers are marked and accredited by the SQA.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.
Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
A pass in Higher English is an entry requirement for most university courses. The skills developed from the study of Higher English are highly relevant to university level study. Skills such as reading, writing, analysis and evaluation are common requirements for most degrees.
