What is special about this course?

The “L5 Vehicle Fitting Principles” qualification offers a more practical and less theory alternative to “L5 Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair”.  So with a hand’s on approach, it focuses on key practical skills associated with high volume tasks covering tyres, steering, suspension, brakes, exhausts and servicing.  

Similar to all other programmes the course includes the relevant coreskills Numeracy, Communications and ICT Information and Communication Technology, as typically required for modern apprenticeship attainment.  

With the changes in industry towards electrical and hybrid vehicle technology you will also cover an awareness of Electric & Hybrid vehicle technology, ensuring you have the base knowledge for working safely on these vehicles.

This course forms part of a L5 Vehicle Fitting (Fast-fit) modern apprenticeship programme, where attaining this on a full-time basis may simply a modern apprenticeship route in the fast-fit industry.

This course can also be used as a steppingstone towards entry for the more theory based L5 Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair programme.

Entry requirements

You should have two qualifications at SCQF Level 3/4/5 or equivalent and you will be asked to undertake a brief aptitude test and discuss your application with a member of college staff. You can also progress onto this course with a relevant Entry Level 3 Certificate

You will undertake the following units towards attainment of the “L5 Vehicle Fitting Principles” from IMI awards;

  • Knowledge of Inspection, Repair and Replacement of Light Vehicle Tyres
  • Skills in Inspection, Repair and Replacement of Light Vehicle Tyres
  • Knowledge of Inspection and Replacement of Light Vehicle Exhaust Components
  • Skills in Inspection and Replacement of Light Vehicle Exhaust Components
  • Knowledge of Inspection, Testing and Replacement of Vehicle Batteries and Related Components
  • Skills in Inspection, Testing and Replacement of Vehicle Batteries and Related Components
  • Knowledge of Inspection and Replacement of Light Vehicle Suspension Dampers and Springs
  • Skills in Inspection and Replacement of Light Vehicle Suspension Dampers and Springs
  • Knowledge of Inspection, Adjustment and Replacement of Light Vehicle Braking Systems and Components
  • Skills in Inspection, Adjustment and Replacement of Light Vehicle Braking Systems and Components
  • Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance

You will gain an excellent introduction into these vehicle systems function, and the use of modern tools and equipment relevant to the area. You will leave this course with excellent knowledge and variety of transferable skills to apply for modern apprenticeships in the trade.

Achievement is determined by successfully completing practical observations and circa 4 x online assessments taken throughout the academic year.

Full Time - Mainly face to face teaching with a practical hands-on approach to workshop activities, and an expectation for online and independent study to support the theory elements of the programme.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

If you successfully complete this programme you will leave with a Level 5 technical award in vehicle fitting principles from the awarding body IMI (The Institute of the Motor Industry), which is recognised nationally for trade-based awards.

This course forms part of a fast-fit modern apprenticeship programme, where attaining this on a full-time basis may simplify a modern apprenticeship route in the fast-fit industry.  

This course can also be used as a steppingstone towards entry for the more theory based L5 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
