What is special about this course?
This course in welding skills is aimed at individuals looking to gain more practical skills to gain entry into the employment or further study. With the current offshore wind developments off the east coast of Scotland there is a huge requirement for individuals with these skillsets. Suitable for those looking to upskill, reskill and second skill and transition from one subject specialism to another, this introduction to welding course will equip first time welders and those looking to improve their practical skills in MIG welding processes with the fundamental knowledge and skills to weld. The course is a blend of practical and theoretical training and it will provide information on the most commonly used welding processes of MIG welding work, practical instruction on the operation and applications, and the safe use and handling of the equipment.
Entry requirements

On completion of this course, you will have covered:
- Introduction to MIG/MAG welding
- Safe use and handling MIG/MAG welding equipment
- Preparing MIG/MAG welding equipment
- Demonstration of MIG/MAG welding
- Carry out practical welding exercises
- Achieve SQA single unit qualification on single V butt and T Fillet joints
- Identification and rectification of defects
- Qualification number F5F7 12 MIG/MAG Welding Skills
Equipment
PPE: Students will be required to provide their own Flame retardant overalls and safety shoes suitable for the workshop environment. Othe PPE required will be provided. Overalls and safety shoes can be purchased at an additional charge through UHI Perth if required.

Cost = £375.
Students may have the potential of applying for £200 a year towards the cost of the Welding Skills Evening Class from ILA Scotland. This is a Scottish Government scheme for people with an income of £22,000 a year or less or who are on benefits. The money is not a loan - so you don't have to pay any of it back. If you are 16 or over, you could be eligible for help with funding for this “hands on” practical skills based evening class where upon successful completion you will be presented with an SQA and or college certificate in the welding and fabrication processes you completed.
