What is special about this course?

New Skills is aimed at young people and adults who would like specialist learning and teaching opportunities to develop their personal, social and work-related skills for independent living or for future study. The support we provide means it is particularly suitable for people with additional support needs. In this flexible and practical course, you will work in groups to try out a range of subjects and achieve personal learning goals. You will attend college three to four days a week and study a range of qualifications and awards, including SQA units and ASDAN Awards. We also run regular events with other local colleges, providing social, recreational and sporting opportunities.

New Skills students get the opportunity to take part in a residential.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however you must be willing to work in a group and want to develop your personal and social skills. You will be invited to discuss your application with a member of the team.

Vocational qualifications from a variety of ASDAN awards. Core subjects include employability skills, independent living skills and citizenship skills.

Other options available over the three years may include catering and hospitality; childcare; arts and crafts; enterprise skills; construction; media studies; gardening; music; drama; IT; motor vehicle maintenance and personal safety awareness.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
