BA (Hons) Outdoor Education and Learning

Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study?

No, Perth was my first choice.

Why was this the right course for you?

Originally, I applied for the HNC Coaching and Developing Sport course but found that it wasn’t suited for my future goals. So, after talking with my then personal advisory tutor (PAT) and the outdoor degree leader, I was given the option of joining the degree. After taking the information home and thinking about it overnight, it was clear that this was the course for me.

The first year has a greater focus on outdoor activities and personal skills, which was helpful for someone like myself, with very little previous outdoor experience. Second year looked more at coaching skills and using the outdoors as a vehicle for education, which helped to narrow down personal focuses and interests within the outdoors. Third year has a focal point on outdoor education within the curriculum and geomorphology, whilst also allowing for work placement to help increase your experience within your chosen avenue. Fourth year’s focus is on the dissertation which is written on your own chosen subject area and allows for increased knowledge in a specific area of interest.

The course is all encompassing and allows for many different avenues to be looked at and pursued.

What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you receive from tutors and lecturers?

With classes being small, compared to other universities, it allows for a better personal connection with lecturers. It helps to create a more discussion-led lecture rather than taking notes from a PowerPoint. This ratio size also means that the tutors get to know you personally and this is helpful for when you’re struggling or need to get help or advice.

What career direction would you like to take after studying?

Currently I am leaning towards outdoor activities with children, but with a greater focus on outdoor learning and creating an environment that encourages child-led learning and an appreciation/nurturing attitude for the world that we live.

How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?

The degree has helped open my eyes to the vast number of opportunities within the outdoors. It has helped me find my own personal interests and has guided me towards job opportunities within these. It has also helped me gain contacts for future career goals and has allowed me to start making a name for myself within the outdoor sector.

What advice would you give to those considering studying?

Don’t be afraid to push yourself outside of your comfort zones and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. This will not only increase your self-confidence, but it will lead the way to further opportunities and personal development.

What are your favourite things about Perth College UHI?

The relationships that you are able to build with classmates and lecturers due to the classes being small is one of my favourite things about Perth College UHI. It makes the transition from school to university not as daunting and allows everybody to contribute to class discussions without the worry of talking in front of an entire lecture theatre.

Best thing about living in the Highlands and Islands?

The facilities for outdoor activities are prominent within the Highlands and Islands. Opportunities for every activity are right on your doorstep or a short drive away, and there are always people to accompany you on your adventures!
