About this course

In this course you will study three Biology units at SCQF level 7, which will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Cell Biology, Microbiology and Biotechnology. 

This award is a qualification designed to address the practical laboratory skills needed for multi skilled individuals within the Science sector and includes the inter-personal skills required for the 21st century economy.

Biotechnology: An Introduction is designed to enable learners to understand key aspects of biotechnology, including how genetically modified organisms are produced, the growth vessels used for large scale synthesis of biotechnology products, and the traditional and novel applications of biotechnology.

Cell Biology: Theory and Laboratory Skills is designed to enable learners to understand key aspects of cell biology, including structure and function of the eukaryotic cell membrane and cell organelles, protein processing and degradation, cellular communication and cell replication and division. Learners will also develop practical skills in techniques relevant to cell biology.

Microbiology: Theory and Laboratory Skills designed to enable learners to understand key aspects of micro-organisms, the different habitats they are found in, and their beneficial and detrimental effects. Learners will also develop practical skills in techniques relevant to microbiology.

Entry requirements

  • One Science Higher and no fewer than three National 5 passes, including Biology or Human Biology (or equivalent).
  • National Progression Award in Laboratory Science at SCQF level 6 
  • National Certificate in Applied Sciences at SCQF level 6 
  • National Qualification in an appropriate science such as SWAP Access to Science.  
  • Learners should preferably possess some NQ Units at Higher level.

Course progression

Progression routes into Higher Education can include either an HNC in Applied Sciences or HND Applied Sciences, or HND Applied Biological Sciences or HND Applied Chemical Sciences. Depending on previous qualifications and individual course entry requirements, degree entry may also be possible.
