About this course
National Progression Award (NPA) at SCQF level 4.
Aimed at learners who may already have national 3 or 4 qualifications in science and want to broaden their knowledge in a health and life science context as well as gain additional practical experience in the laboratory.
Undertaking this course allows learners with an interest in science and health to make an informed choice regarding the next steps on their learning journey. It will enhance the skills and knowledge of those who may already have studied science at National 3 or 4, and provide the first step to a qualification in science for those who have not previously studied science subjects.
Course content
Course content
Learners will study chemistry and physics as well as gain practical skills and experience in the laboratory. Learners will also develop skills of scientific inquiry, investigation, and knowledge and an understanding of human health through studying the unit Science: Human Health. These skills will be applied when considering the applications of human health on our lives, as well as the implications on the environment/society.
Knowledge will also be developed on some of the product types made by the life sciences industry and their application in the health sector. This will also include a practical activity which will help to develop knowledge and skills in the correct use of a biomedical device.
The unit will involve learner research which will encourage the development of time management, information retrieval and research and problem-solving skills. Learners will also develop an understanding of roles and responsibilities in the workplace and awareness of health and safety. Learners also have the opportunity to gain an understanding of several of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Laboratory Science, including:
- Procedures for Scientific or Technical Activities
- Maintain Effective and Efficient Working Relationships for Scientific or Technical Activities
- Use Information Recording Systems for Scientific or Technical Activities
- Carry out Simple Scientific or Technical Tests using Manual Equipment
- Carry out Simple Scientific or Technical Tests using Automated Equipment
- Prepare Scientific or Technical Samples for Testing Activities
Core skills in numeracy, communication, ICT are also developed throughout the course.
