Coaching and Leading Adventure Sports (subject to approval) NQ

What is special about this course?

With a focus on coaching and leading others in adventure sports and outdoor activities, this course gives you the opportunity to advance your experience and qualifications, while enhancing your employability.

Developing your personal skills and abilities in adventure sports such as canoeing, paddle-boarding and kayaking (in white water and surf), rock climbing and hill walking with overnight expeditions as well as a residential field trip experience. The skills, experiences and qualifications provided throughout this course will allow you to gain (or further your) employment in the outdoor sector and/or progress to courses of further study.

Entry requirements

An enthusiastic interest in coaching and leading adventure sports and outdoor activities is required, as is personal adventure sport experience. Candidates are expected to participate in a range of land and water-based activities within the course therefore experience of participation in outdoor activities is essential, as is the ability to swim.

To be prepared for the broad range of activities required, candidates would benefit from having achieved Communication at SCQF level 5 or higher, and hold a relevant SCQF level 5 qualification such as either: 
•    NQ Outdoor Activities and Leadership (available at UHI Perth)
•    NC Sport & Fitness Level 5 
•    5 x SCQF Level 5 Nationals
•    5 x Intermediate 2s 
•    5 x Standard Grades

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

What can I do on completion of my course?

This qualification has been developed for a range of candidates from school leavers with a portfolio of L5 qualifications, to those with outdoor experience looking for a change of career. The course provides a progression route for existing L5 NQ Outdoor Activities & Leadership students; additionally, the course is suitable for mature learners who are looking to upskill prior to moving into the outdoor sector or onto an HN programme.

Employment opportunities following the NQ Coaching & Leading Adventure Sports include a range of instructional roles (depending on experience and vocational awards attained), for example outdoor instructor at local centres and climbing walls. Other opportunities include support roles within sports development and clubs.
