Welcome to the Centre for Interpretation Studies.
The Centre for Interpretation Studies (CIS) was launched in July 2007 as a centre of excellence to champion innovative and sustainable interpretation.
We carry out applied research and advise and support individuals, communities, businesses and organisations in delivering interpretation projects. Our work is designed to meet policy goals and create high-quality experiences that the public will enjoy while encouraging thinking and practices that are economically rewarding, environmentally sound and socially responsible.
The CIS focuses on knowledge and skills development to support social, cultural and economic agendas and, specifically, tourism and education, both in Scotland and internationally.
Our activities focus on four main areas:
- Research – to undertake high-quality, innovative research in interpretation and related disciplines;
- Knowledge exchange – to share and disseminate research and practice through seminars, conferences and consultancy;
- Professional Studies – to provide advanced-level courses for practitioners across the cultural and heritage sectors through the MSc Interpretation: Management and Practice;
- Professional Development – to develop and deliver advanced-level training aligned with knowledge and skills needs identified by practitioners and organisations.
