After completing the City & Guilds Professional Chef Award, Jamie McKinnon went on to the SVQ 3 in Hospitality and to win a national BBC TV competition, the Chef’s Protege.
When I left school I came to Perth College UHI to get the experience and qualifications I needed, as I knew that this course produced chefs with all-round skills.
It’s very practical, and I loved going to conferences, meeting top chefs, and taking part in competitions. You also get the chance to do extra qualifications, like the Gleneagles Patisserie certificate.
We started out with the basics, like stocks and sauces, which really helped in going for jobs, as you can be productive right away. Working in the training restaurant is great experience too, as you get to try different areas each week.
Having these skills helped me get a job at Murrayshall House Hotel, where I’m working now as Chef de Parti.
The course also gave me the confidence to win the BBC’s Chef’s Protege on national TV, which was an incredible experience for a student, so I’d definitely advise people to come here.
