For inexperienced users and those who need an introduction to the main elements of Microsoft Office, whether for home or business.

Course content includes:

  • Word Processing: opening, saving and closing documents; typing text; word wrapping; editing and formatting text; formatting paragraphs
  • Spreadsheets: entering data in cells; formatting text and formatting cells; simple formula building; working with rows and columns
  • Presentations: creating slides; formatting text; working with images; effective transitions; and working with themes
  • Database: entering data in tables; changing and adding records; creating basic queries and reports
  • File Management: creating folders; copying and moving files and folders; renaming files and folders; arranging icons by name
  • Internet: effective searching; working with multiple tabs downloading and saving content
  • Email: creating, replying to and forwarding emails; managing your mailbox; working with attachments; formatting and signatures; and dealing with junk mail

Students who successfully complete this course will receive accreditation for Core Skills in Information and Communication Technology
at SCQF Level 4.

This course is designed for those with previous computer knowledge, ideally as a follow-on from Information and Communication Technology (SCQF Level 4).

You will learn how to use an IT system effectively and perform more complex processes using a range of application packages. The focus of this unit is the development of transferable skills and knowledge associated with information technology and is an ideal starting point for anyone interested in progressing to the European Computer Driving Licence, but who does not have the appropriate level of skill.

Course content includes:

  • Word Processing: proofing documents; page setup; headers and footers; text boxes; working with graphics and images
  • Spreadsheets: working with cells, rows and columns, creating, designing and amending charts; sorting and filtering data
  • Databases: creating and modifying tables; working with queries; designing reports
  • Internet: basic browser skills; searching; saving and downloading web content; printing web pages
  • IT systems: finding applications; back-ups; computer viruses

Students who successfully complete this course will receive accreditation for Core Skills in Information and Communication Technology at SCQF Level 5.

This Unit is about using complex information and communication technology (ICT) independently to access, process, and present information in everyday settings, ideally as a follow-on from Information and Communication Technology (SCQF Level 5).

Course content includes:

  • select and start up software (for example, word-processing, spreadsheet, database, media packages) to perform a range of activities
  • be aware of common hardware and software problems, and resolve simple hardware or software problems (for example, using on-screen help, software and hardware manuals)
  • enter and edit data using appropriate applications software
  • locate and extract information in different formats from a range of local or remote data sources (for example, the internet, CD-ROM, intranet, your own computer)
  • apply a complex search strategy to find information (for example, choice of source, order of searching, choice of keywords)
  • evaluate the information found against a set of criteria you select (for example, currency, reliability, bias, relevance, appropriateness of format)
  • evaluate your complex search strategy (for example, did it produce information that matched your chosen criteria, was it effective in terms of time and cost?)
  • present information in an appropriate mode (for example, display on screen, print out, play an audio/video file)
  • keep data secure and well managed (for example, by using passwords, using virus protection software, backing up data, maintaining personal file area).

Students who successfully complete this course may be able to progress onto other course or use the skills learned in your career.
