About this course

The NQ Activity Tourism at SCQF level 6 is designed to introduce the exciting area of activity tourism. It allows you to explore several practical activity tourism activities and to understand what is required to provide these experiences for others. Activity Tourism ranges from activity-based adventure activities involving climbing, rafting, and mountaineering, to less physical, but still activity focused breaks of wildlife watching, nature or local heritage trails. Through exploring a range of enterprises and the activities they provide; you will learn about and develop several different skills and experiences which are necessary for employment in the sector. 

The course provides underpinning knowledge and understanding of this dynamic and diverse sector of the activity tourism industry and offers learners the opportunity to discover and experience the range of options available for potential employment. Learners will engage in activity tourism pursuits, meet employers and research the skills required for the operation of activity tourism enterprises. The course provides an overview of activity and special interest tourism in its widest sense.

The theory elements of this course will be delivered in school by teachers and the applied practical elements will be delivered by College Lecturers through takin part in activity tourism pursuits. Highland Perthshire is one of the key regions within Perthshire to experience white water rafting, canyoning, mountain biking etc and the area attract a huge number of visitors for activity tourism and activity events. This National Certificate is aimed at those wishing to develop skills and experience, which will provide opportunities for employment in the activity tourism sector.

There are a range of Units in this course which include practical elements and require participation in activity tourism pursuits.

  • Map reading and Navigation
    First Aid
    Developing Leadership
    Local Investigations
    A range of land-based activities such as orienteering, hillwalking, rambling, mountain biking
    A range of water-based activities such as canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, canyoning

Please note the activities noted are examples and not an exclusive list. The practical activities that form this course are very much determined by weather and environmental conditions.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good level of personal fitness and have taken part in activity tourism activities in the past. Core skills communication at Level 4 or higher and applications must be supported by your school. At least 5 Standard Grades at Credit/General SCQF Level 5, Intermediate 2 or National 5
