About this course
This is a mainly hands-on, practical course delivered in the comprehensive automotive workshops at the UHI Perth’s Brahan Building.
This course is specifically aimed at those who are looking to learn new introductory skills in vehicle maintenance and repair.
Skills for Work Automotive Skills is an entry level qualification which develops practical skills, knowledge and understanding, alongside the employability skills needed in the motor sector.
Students will gain a variety of transferable skills which will be useful for further study in more specific engineering disciplines, or for progression to a full-time motor vehicle programme.

This is an SQA Skills for Work, group award qualification, covering 4 core units as detailed below;
- Automotive Skills
- The Garage Automotive Skills
- The Technician Automotive Skills
- The Car Automotive Skills
- The Vehicle Modification Project
Across the 4 units, students will cover an introduction into health & safety, tools & equipment, tyre inspection and puncture repair, steering / brake / suspension inspection and component replacement, vehicle valeting, as well as online IMI Auto-City tasks in relation to exploring the variety of career options that exist in the motor trade.
Units and topics covered include additional skills e.g. employability/ teamwork/ communication.

Entry requirements
Learners should be working at National 4 level in Maths, English and a Technology/Practical subject. A brief aptitude test and face-to-face interview will take place on campus.

Course progression
Attainment of this course would count towards the "Technical Skill" entry requirement in all our level 5 Motor Vehicle programmes, requiring just the remaining National 4 Mathematics and English for entry.
The skills you acquire are also transferable to many careers and would be a valuable qualification when applying to College or for a Foundation or Modern Apprenticeship.
