About this course

UHI Perth and Perth High School have collaborated to co-deliver this course and are delighted to offer learners the opportunity to study both at college and school to gain this qualification.  

This qualification design is 5 units studied at National 5 level that collectively award 24 SCQF points. It is an internally assessed award with no external assessment or examination. This course is a blend of academic and employability skills for learners who are interested in a career in care within the health and social care sector.  

This will allow learners to experience vocationally related learning and encourage learners to develop a good work ethic. It is aimed at young people who have enjoyed science-based subjects and are looking for an alternative route to higher.   

This Skills for Work course is also designed to provide learners with opportunities for developing Core Skills and Skills for Learning, Skills for Life and Skills for Work, with a strong focus on enhancing skills and attitudes for employability. It will prepare the young person for the world of work and the opportunities that can arise.

The five units studied:  

  • Health Sector: Working in non-clinical roles (National 5) 
  • Health Sector: Working in the Health Sector (National 5) 
  • Life Sciences Industry and the Health Sector (National 5) 
  • Health Sector: Improving Health and Well-being (National 5) 
  • Physiology of the Cardiovascular System (National 5) 

There will be taster employment experience as well as developing skills of working in a team within the learning in environment and the clinical/non-clinical area. 

There will be opportunities to meet employers and employees from different care environments.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have 5 national 4 qualifications, including one science. Learners should be ready to work at SCQF level 5. You may be invited to an interview at UHI Perth.
