Postgraduate Certificate in Socio-Legal Issues of Childhood

Postgraduate Certificate in Socio-Legal Issues of Childhood

Offered by online learning, supported by staff from the Centre for Rural Childhood, the Certificate blends the theoretical background of socio-legal issues of childhood with its practical implementation in a variety of contemporary settings.

There is a range of models and philosophies relating to contemporary childhood issues and developments. This spans general issues such as education, well being, relationships and Information Communication Technology (ICT), to the more specialised requirements demanded for engaging in research with children.

The impact of the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on legislation, administrative practices and procedures in hearing the child’s voice has been extensive and as such suggests a variety of practices across a range of settings matched by a continuum of trans-disciplinary theorising.

The programme will offer a foundation understanding at Level 11 that acknowledges this diversity whilst enabling in-depth study relating to children and childhood.

It consists of 4, 15-credit modules, delivered within the UHI two semester cycle, commencing in January; 2 modules being completed by candidates each semester, as below:

  • 15 credit The UNCRC: Its Development and Implementation First Semester
  • 15 credit Research with Children First Semester
  • 15 credit Article 12: Listening to the Child’s Voice Second Semester
  • 15 credit Contemporary Issues of Children and Childhood Second Semester, starts January.
