Erasmus programme at Perth College UHI
Erasmus is the EU's flagship education and training programme, enabling staff and students in Europe to gain international experience through studying, teaching and working abroad.
The Programme is named after the humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1465-1536) whose travels for work and study took in the era’s great centres of learning, including Paris, Leuven and Cambridge. Like the man, the Erasmus programme places great importance on mobility and furthering career prospects through learning.
For students
For staff
For students
Studies show that a period spent abroad not only enriches students' lives in the academic field but also in the acquisition of intercultural skills and self-reliance.
Erasmus is a great opportunity to spend between 3 and 12 months in another European country, and have it count towards your degree. You get to experience another culture and a new way of looking at your subject, make new friends and grow as a person.

Pre-departure training
Once you get accepted on Erasmus exchange you can apply for a scholarship for language training to be undertaken while still at Perth. You will be responsible for organising your training and the scholarship will cover either full cost of training, or part of it.
Training in-country
An allowance of up to one month’s study grant can be awarded to students for linguistic preparation in the country where they will complete their Erasmus period of study. Language preparation must be delivered by a recognised provider of language-training and be held in the host country immediately prior to the study period.
Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC)
Erasmus Intensive Language Courses are specialised courses in the less widely used and less taught languages of the countries participating in the programme which serve to prepare students for their Erasmus period abroad. An additional study grant can be awarded to students for attendance on an EILC. The grant is intended to offset the additional costs of taking part in an EILC before the student has commenced their Erasmus mobility period. The additional study grant is paid for the duration of the EILC of between 2 to 6 weeks.

For staff
The aim of Erasmus is to encourage and support academic mobility of higher education students and teachers within the European Economic Area.
Apart from the student mobility, which is the most visible and "iconic" element in the Programme, support is also given to developing closer links between university faculties.
There are two possible ways of participating in the programme:
Erasmus offers great opportunities for academic and administrative staff at Higher Education Institutions to teach or work elsewhere in one of the 30 other participating countries in Europe. Staff training is an option for teaching and non-teaching staff who want to take part in the Erasmus programme.
This is an option if you are:
- Going to another HEI which holds an EUC
Within the broad objectives of staff training it encompasses things such as short secondments, job-shadowing and study visits.
Mobility can be undertaken by staff to another HEI which holds an EUC and with which Perth College UHI has an Inter-institutional Agreement.
The recommended minimum duration for teaching assignments is five days and they may not exceed a maximum of six weeks. Teaching assignments shorter than the recommended period must include at least five teaching hours.
ECTS
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) aims to facilitate student mobility in the European Union and enable transfer of credits for the benefit of students who complete part of their studies at another participating institution.
ECTS credits are a value allocated to describe the course and also the entire student workload (such as lectures, practical work, seminars, private study, examinations, homework, etc.) required to complete these courses successfully.
Credits in ECTS are not only dependent on course hours but also on the entire workload that the courses require. All the obligatory and optional courses are credited by the ECTS. ECTS credits are also awarded for work such as dissertations, projects and placements.
Normally one academic year of work constitutes 60 ECTS.
ECTS evolved from Erasmus programme and has been designed to support the transfer of Erasmus students’ learning outcomes and competences.
Erasmus Charter
Perth College UHI has recently been awarded the Erasmus University Charter (EUC). This will allow Perth to send and receive students and staff members to and from educational institutions across Europe provided that institution is also in receipt of the Erasmus University Charter.
The aim of the ERASMUS Programme, part of the wider Lifelong Learning Programme, is to encourage and support academic mobility of higher education students and teachers within Europe. The Charter will also allow delivery and support staff the opportunity to visit institutions across Europe on teaching assignments, staff training or work shadowing.
