Research strategies
Perth College UHI’s Research Strategy reflects one of the aims of the UHI to: “expand UHI’s research capability and imbue a self-sustaining culture which will advance knowledge, support student learning and contribute to social and economic development”.
The overall aim of our research strategy is to undertake activities which build Perth College UHI’s research culture at all levels to improve learning, teaching and the student experience, and contribute to the professional development of College staff. The College has a Research Committee with the following membership:

The function of the Research Committee is to consider the following and make recommendations to the Academic Board:
- The formulation of a research strategy and policy.
- The establishment of procedures for monitoring and evaluating research undertaken.
- The provision of mentoring and support for Perth College UHI staff involved in research.
- To identify and secure sources of revenue for research and to allocate these resources.
- To take advice from internal research forums related to the College’s main research areas.
- To consider any other matter remitted to the Committee by the Academic Board.
- Liaison with appropriate UHI Committees within the Executive Office structure.
- Appointment of Sub Groups.
Research support arrangements
The provision of mentoring and support for Perth College UHI staff involved in research is the responsibility of the Research Committee.

UHI's policies and codes of practice on good practice in research, ethical conduct and avoidance of research fraud are available on request.
Research staff
Information on the policies and procedures for supporting and developing fixed-term contract research staff can be found within the UHI publication scheme.
Until recently much of the research activity at Perth College UHI was carried out by the Centre for Mountain Studies (CMS) which was established in 2000. Its aim is to be recognised globally as a centre of excellence on issues relating to sustainable development in mountain regions.
Objectives are to coordinate and implement activities which:
- respond to the needs of communities, institutions, and enterprises in the Highlands;
- contribute to sustainable development opportunities for the region;
- offer benefits to comparable regions elsewhere in Europe and beyond.
Centre for Mountain Studies activities include:
- characterising Europe's mountain regions;
- mapping socio-economic research on rural development in Scotland;
scoping study on the impacts of deer;
- integrating children into planning and running community woodlands;
- large-scale spatial planning for the Highlands and Islands.
Sources of support for recent projects include: European Commission, Scottish Executive, WWF, Deer Commission for Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Highland Council.
