Waste electrical and electronic equipment in Perth that would otherwise go to landfill sites is now being repaired and reused, thanks to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre, established in partnership with the Centre for Enterprise at Perth College UHI and Perth & Kinross Council.
Items like IT equipment, cameras and DVD players are collected weekly from the College and the Council and then repaired at the WEEE Centre in Kinnoull House, Friarton, before being sold or donated to local social enterprises, voluntary and charitable community groups.

The two staff working in the WEEE Centre are funded through the Future Jobs Fund initiative, which aims to help long-term unemployed 18–24-year-olds by giving them full-time jobs for 26 weeks.
They are getting a full wage while learning other work-related skills, including CV development, problem-solving, team-working and meeting employers’ expectations. One of the programme's graduates has already found work in the local retail trade.
Alongside the Future Job Fund programme, Perth College UHI also runs Get Ready for Work, an employability programme for school leavers who haven’t managed to get into work, training or education.
To help them find work or go on to full-time study, the College provides twelve weeks of support and guidance covering CV development, letter writing, developing motivation, communication and team-working skills. They also get a weekly allowance for good attendance from Skills Development Scotland.
