 Visual Communications HNC/D 

Course Details

About this course

This is a practical-based course aimed at those seking a studio-based career in design, media or advertising and encourages students to develop their skills in the creative design process. This course can also be studied part-time over 2 years for the HNC and 4 years for the HND. 

You will develop a unique combination of graphic design, digital media, illustration and lens-based skills. Live project work is undertaked in liaison with industry to help generate employment opportunities.  You also have the option of taking individual units.

You study

You will explore topics such as: web design; photography; illustration; video; visual research; design process and industry practice. Utilising industry software and facilities, the emphasis is on combining the theory and technical skills through a range of practical projects that allow students to develop their own creativity. You will be given the opportunity to collaborate with music students to design and produce promotional packs for emerging bands and musicians. We will equip you with both the aesthetic and technical skills required in our increasingly competitive world.

An opportunity for national and international study trips enhances the experience.

Getting started

Entry on to this course is by interview and portfolio evidence. 

Requirements for the programme are one Higher for HNC or two Highers for HND one of which should be in an arts or design-related discipline. You can also progress to this course from the NC Art, Design and Media. We will consider individual competence in art, design, or lens-based skills evidenced by a portfolio of work. Communication skills, self-motivation and imagination are also required.

Progression at Perth College UHI

You may choose to enter at either HNC or HND level in your first year. Upon successful completion of the HNC you may progress onto the HND Visual Communications.

Careers and Training

You may wish to further your study on to a degree programme at college or university. Depending on interview, graduating HND students may articulate directly into year 3 of the BA (Hons) Visual Communications at Abertay University.

This course also prepares you for a career in art, digital media, design, broadcast, graphics or illustration.

HNC is 12 credits, HND 30 credits.  £86 per credit.
