SQA PDA: Introduction to Tutoring ESOL (ITESOL) SCQF level 6
This new qualification provides the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully negotiate and deliver ESOL in a supported context. It runs for 17 weeks on Wednesdays from 6-9pm, and costs £330 (eligible for an ILA).
Unit 1 runs from 18 January to 21 March (10 sessions).
Unit 2 runs from 18 April to 30 May (7 sessions).
They are:
Language and Learning in ESOL (F43X 33). This covers: • Factors affecting ESOL learning • Lexical, grammatical and phonological aspects of the English Language • Language Skills • Factors affecting language selection in ESOL tutoring.
Assessed by: written assignments on ESOL learning and contexts, and on language selection, plus a closed book test on language and language skills.
Developing ESOL Tutoring Skills (F43W 33) This covers: • Strategies for managing an effective learning environment • Planning ESOL sessions • Selecting and designing appropriate tasks and resources.
Assessed by a portfolio, consisting of classroom observations, a learner profile, and records of tutoring sessions.
This qualification helps develop skills for: • volunteers and tutor assistants, who tutor or intend to tutor, ESOL learners or work with them in other capacities • teachers of other subjects working with students who are ESOL learners • community learning and development workers with ESOL responsibilities • anyone interested in ESOL teaching who may want to consider further qualifications at a later stage.
You do not need to have existing ESOL teaching qualifications.
