 Information Technology (Computing) HNC/D 

Course Details

About this course

National research suggests that the need for systems and support staff will grow, with database and web skills also being in strong demand. This HNC/D programme will prepare you for a career in the computing and IT industry, where there is still a substantial skills shortage in the UK. It also provides an excellent way to enhance your existing qualifications.

You study

At HNC level you will study: an introduction to SQL and database design; developing applications using Microsoft products; PC first line support; working in a project team; computer operating systems and understanding the concepts of e-commerce and web development.

The HND covers the following IT subjects: web technology and security; IT legislation; programming; relational database systems and advanced website development. You will also have the chance to gain vendor qualifications such as Microsoft’s MCDST and ORACLE courses.

Getting started

For the HNC: an appropriate NC at Intermediate 2 or a Higher; appropriate Standard Grades plus a Higher.

For the HND: an appropriate NC at Intermediate 2 or two Highers; appropriate Standard Grades plus two Highers, preferably Maths, Computing or English. The HNC should provide you with direct entry to Year 2.

Your previous experience and credentials may still qualify you for this course. Please arrange an appointment with a member of College staff to discuss your eligibility.

The HNC can lead to the HND in Information Technology (Year 2) and then on to Year 3 of our BSc in Computing.

Careers and Training

The award prepares you for a career in website development or as a support technician. It also prepares you to follow a career in business applications using relational database management systems technology, to become a database administrator or to act in a supervisory capacity tailoring and/or writing scripts to automate aspects of information technology applications for users with less expertise.
