Perth College: a great place to study

Surrounded by breathtaking views of the Grampian hills and located in the heart of Perthshire — just west of Perth city's buzzing centre — Perth College UHI’s campus is an ideal place to study.

Our commitment to excellence means that we are continuously improving our facilities. Our custom built library is a modern space which gives our students access to thousands of resources, including books, journals and multi-media items.

We have created new learning spaces, like our learning café, which helps students to learn in new and innovative ways.  We have instilled a culture of exploration, so that students have access to 'real life' tools and experiences, like student exchange, work study, and cutting-edge software.

We love the campus environment, but we know that not all our students can come to the College campus, which is why we have made large investments in technology and off-campus facilities; many of our courses are also available in your workplace, in our Local Learning Centres, through video conference or online, so students can study with us no matter where they are in the world!

Construction Department Facilities

The Construction programme is split into six distinct areas, each with their own specialist facilities which enable students to get the hands-on experience needed to work in the real world.

Our five workshops — bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, electrical, painting and decorating and plumbing — are designed to simulate site training for industry apprentices, and feature modern tools and equipment. Most of our workshops have access equipment to allow safe work at height.

Accommodation for those studying construction technology includes a technical drawing room, computer aided draughting suite, laboratory and technology classroom. Equipment is available for manual and electronic draughting, land surveying, construction materials testing and structural mechanics.

Specialist equipment includes

  • Brickwork workshop: mortar mixing pan-mill and brick-cutting masonry saw bench.
  • Carpentry and Joinery workshop: band saws; cross-cut saw; surface and thickness planers; a spindle moulder; mortice machines; sanders; routers and drills.
  • Electrical Installation workshop: equipment which allows for the provision of electrical installations, including their circuits and sub-circuits, and final inspection and testing of completed installations.
  • Painting and Decorating workshop: equipment which allows the full range of techniques to be delivered, including painting, wallpapering and spraying.
  • Plumbing workshop: equipment which allows for the provision of the full range of techniques, including hot and cold water systems, waste water pipework, central heating systems and gas installations.
