 Equality and diversity

Perth College UHI is committed to being both a college and employer of choice. We are committed to the promotion of equality and diversity and believe there is no place for unlawful discrimination in any of our services and activities.

We aim to ensure that all of our policies, procedures and practices do not unfairly discriminate and that positive measures are taken to redress any inequalities in employment practices, provision of services to students and customers or the way in which we manage our business.

The Equality Act 2010 introduces a new public sector equality duty, enabling the College to build on our equality objectives. The 'general duty' came into effect on 05 April 2011 and requires us, as a public authority, to pay due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality and foster good relations across a range of protected characteristics. The 'specific duties' for public authorities are still being considered by the Scottish Government. In the absence of specific duties, the College is committed to continuing to follow good practice, assessing equality impact and gathering relevant evidence and information to allow us to eliminate discrimination, advance equality and foster good relations across a range of protected characteristics. Our published documents - Gender Equality Scheme, Disability Equality Scheme, Race Equality Scheme - continue to be relevant as we develop a Single Equality Scheme which encompasses all protected characteristics.

We are currently shaping up our Single Equality Scheme and are grateful for the comments of our students, staff and community groups in helping us identify areas for inclusion and action. Our Single Equality Scheme will cover the nine  characteristics protected under the Equality Act 2010 of: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

As our work on our Single Equality Scheme progresses, information will be available on this page. In the meantime, you can download information on our existing equality schemes and action plans on this page and other information showing our commitment to equality and diversity using the links on the left hand side.

We would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions about our equality schemes or about our priorities for our Single Equality Scheme. Please email Susan Bald, Director of HR and Organisational Development, susan.bald@perth.uhi.ac.uk
