Webster Building: home to our centres of expertise

Perth College UHI has big plans for the future!

With the aim of becoming a sector leader and achieving University title, our 10-year vision calls for us to be internationally recognised and known for our ambition and achievements.

That's why we've made big investments in world-class academic research, and why we are home to three unique research centres and two specialist centres: Air Service Training and the Centre for Enterprise.

Mountain Studies

The Centre for Mountain Studies (CMS) was established in 2000, and aims to be recognised globally as a centre of excellence on sustainable development in mountain regions.

The CMS offers a unique online MSc in Managing Sustainable Mountain Development and is run by Centre Director Professor Martin Price. He is a Nobel Peace Prize Winner for his work in publishing Mountain Area Research and Management: Integrated Approaches, a book which brings together scientists and practitioners from five continents to present their experience in undertaking activities that contribute to our understanding and informed management of mountain areas.

Interpretation

The Centre for Interpretation was launched at Perth College UHI in 2007, with the aim of establishing a centre of excellence to take forward the concepts of innovative and sustainable interpretation.

Interpretation is the process of communicating messages about our cultural and natural heritage and inspiring audiences with a wider understanding of their environment.

Along with encouraging further research, facilitating knowledge exchange within the profession and developing opportunities for professional development, the centre offers an MSc in Interpretation: Management and Practice.

The Centre is directed by Genevieve Adkins, former Head of Interpretation for Historic Scotland.

Rural Childhood

Until now, much of the focus on children’s issues has largely been on children with an urban upbringing.

The UHI Centre for Rural Childhood, based at Perth College UHI, plays a major role in addressing that imbalance by emphasising the very different experiences of rural children and the implications this has for their growth and development and for effective service provision.

Research focuses on a variety of issues including health, education and the experiences of immigrant children now moving to the more rural areas of Scotland.

Professor Rebecca Wallace is the Centre’s director.

Air Service Training

Air Service Training (AST) Ltd has been training the world's airlines, maintenance organisations and military formations for over 73 years, and is the longest established and most experienced organisation of its type.

AST is approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority to offer courses for the Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence.

The partnership with Perth College UHI has produced aircraft engineering awards at a variety of levels which may be offered as standalone awards, or be delivered in conjunction with the approved courses.  AST maintains specialist hangar and workshop areas at Perth Airport.
